Police capture Chick-Fil-A burglary suspect who swims to island in Houston park

-

After a three-hour standoff with police the man accused of trying to break into a Chick-fil-A In Southwest Houston is finally in custody. It ended in a dramatic arrest.  It doesn't take an all-hands-on-deck approach to to bring a suspect into custody, but this burglar did everything he could not to get caught.

Around 3am HPD responded to a burglary in progress at a Chick-fil-A along beltway 8 and Bellaire Blvd. The store owner had a motion camera in place and saw that a man was attempting to break into the store safe with a hammer. When police arrived, the suspect fled the scene running across the freeway to Arthur Storey Park. However, with police hot on his trail, the suspect decided to jump into the retention pond at the park and swam to a small island.

The suspect was completely surrounded with a swat team in place, and a chopper overhead keeping an eye on him, but at one point they did lose sight of him because he covered himself in mud and hid beneath some bushes. Even a thermal detector had to be used. All because he refused to come off the island.

The man will be charged with burglarizing a building and we were told that the burglar also has an open warrant for another burglary that he committed.
