TRINITY COUNTY (FOX 26) - Polly Ferris holds her 5-year-old daughter Saylor and gives her kiss. "God was watching out for you." She tells her. It's a kiss Ferris doesn't take for granted.
Around 7:30 this morning she got a phone call. Her autistic daughter's school van had been in a wreck. It was bad. She rushed to the scene.
"Just seeing the van and seeing the truck and how much damage there was. I mean, if you don't know if your child was okay or not, you only think the worst. When something like that happens it's traumatic," Ferris said.
According to state police, the van had stopped in front of a home on FM 1893 near Old Johnson Farm Road just outside of Trinity to pick up a student. A pickup truck with slammed into it.
The driver of the van is identified as 55-year-old Chandra Wheeler from Trinity, TX. The driver of the Ford pick-up is identified as 17-year-old Micah Brock, also from Trinity.
Five students suffered non-life threatening injuries. A 7-year-old girl who was the daughter of a county deputy died.
"Saylor loved that little girl. I know they always held hands. It was just very traumatic to know that she was holding her hand," said Ferris, her voice quavering with emotion. She says normally Saylor sits in that seat but had inexplicably changed places today.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
