PEARLAND (FOX26) - Police confirmed Saturday morning that the body of a 9-year old boy who went missing in Pearland on Thanksgiving was recovered near a lake on the back of the property where he was staying with family.
In response, Pearland community members held a vigil Saturday night at the Pearland Dad's Club ball field to remember Marcus McGhee.
Of the hundreds in attendance, many at the vigil had been among the thousands police say took part in a citizen search for Marcus after his disappearance.
"It's how Pearland is," said Rebecca Burnham, one of the vigil organizers and a volunteer in the search. "It's what we do. We back each other up."
Marcus had been visiting town from Connecticut for a family Thanksgiving gathering, according to police. Police report Marcus was last seen by family around 4pm Thursday night. Security footage showed him exiting the side of the home and ventured north on the property.
Marcus was the nephew of NBA player Marcus Camby. Community members say having high profile relative was not the motivation for the community to help in the search. Stefani Womack is a school bus driver in Pearland, and pointed out, "all the kids on my bus are my babies, and if it was one of them I'd do the same thing."
Police are still investigating the cause of death. They have said they do not suspect foul play.
