2 Houston parades honor legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

For the first time in 40 years, the Original MLK Day Parade is an official city event. 

The Black Heritage Society is expecting 40,000 people to show up for the 10 a.m. start in downtown Houston.

Civil Rights icon John Lewis will headline the parade along with Astros Star George Springer.

Organizers of a competing parade are still holding their event at the same time in Midtown. The MLK Grande Parade has chosen the mayor's two re-election challengers as grand marshals.

The Original MLK Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. at Houston City Hall and will travel down several downtown Houston streets. The parade is expected to last two hours.

The MLK Grande Parade begins at 10 a.m. and will orginate in Midtown at San Jacinto and Elgin Street and will travel northbound on San Jacinto to Webster Street. The parade route is one mile and is expected to last two hours.
