Local hip-hop community remembers life of teen killed

- Thursday, a local hip-hop community came together to remember the life of the teen shot and killed in west Houston on March 21st.

They've raised thousands of dollars in just days for his family who is mourning the loss.

Just 20-years-old, Jehlen Vaughn, had a bright future ahead of him. Many here in the Houston hip-hop community said that his passion for dancing touched so many people, which is why they came together to remember his life.

Many of us have a passion built deep in our bones, one that can't help but shine through us and onto others. For Jehlen Vaughn, that passion was dancing.

“I think deep inside,” said his mother Liz Vaughn. “He always had that beat. It became his breath, it became his air, it become his freedom, it became his life.”

Vaughn said her son used to watch Youtube videos for hours in his room practicing. His inspiration was Chris Brown.

“I would walk past his room and shake my head and laugh. And one day I walked past his room and had to double back, because he was awesome!”

And it wasn’t long before his dancing reputation took off in the community.

“He oozed dance,” said his instructor Joel Rivera.  “He oozed artistry.  He was a true embodiment of movement.”

But the rest of the world will never get to see Vaughn’s passion and abilities flourish. He was found shot to death on Monday afternoon at 2525 Old Farm Road.  As of now, family says no one has been arrested but according to HPD, a suspect was seen by witnesses fleeing from the house after shots were heard.

“I feel like my feet have left the ground,” said Vaughn. “It's like I’m floating, living in someone else’s bad dream.”

With with all the emotions and an investigation still underway, Thursday was a night for everyone who was touched by Vaughn’s  love for dancing and life to show that he will never be forgotten here in Houston. They said they will continue to dance for him.

“They thought they put his light out, but he is actually shining brighter. He is shining brighter.”

So far over sixteen-thousand-dollars has been raised through funding to help Vaughn’s family pay for the funeral and expenses.
