10 years later grieving grandmother still searching for answers in granddaughter's death

- Krista Leigh Dorsey was Candi Redding Lewis' first grandchild.

“And my only one for 8 years,” Lewis said.

The last time Lewis saw her granddaughter Krista was on her 15th birthday.

“July 24, 2005, three weeks later she was dead,” Lewis said.

The teens death has brought Lewis’ life to a standstill. She says she has spent the last 10 years sitting in this small room in the glow of her computer. Lewis says she’s been told more than once to just get over it.

“Don’t tell me how to grieve,” said Lewis. “I’ll never get over it never.”

And Lewis says she’ll never believe what Liberty County Sheriff’s deputies say happened to her granddaughter.
Shortly after turning 15, Krista ran away from home.

“When she went missing they kept telling me she’ll be back all runaways come back home,” Lewis said.

But there would be no coming back home for Krista. Three weeks after she was reported missing her skull was found by a neighbor’s dog.

“They didn’t even look for her and she was less than a hundred yards from her house she hadn’t run away at all,” Lewis said.

The official cause of the teens death was ruled undetermined. A captain with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department says they believe Krista’s death was due to a drug overdose.

But they will never convince Krista’s grandmother of that.

“I want Krista to know that her gamma tried and tried to find out what happened to her,” Lewis said.

In 2010 the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department says it sent this case to the Department of Public Safety’s cold case murder squad.

The sheriff’s captain says DPS detectives came to the same conclusion they did. That Krista Dorsey’s death appears to be due to a drug overdose.
