BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas (FOX 26) - Two people drowned, and one is hospitalized after an incident near the San Luis Pass around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, authorities say.
The Brazoria County Sheriff's Office says 67-year-old Larry Lumpkin of Willis, Texas, was swimming in the surf at Treasure Island when he began to struggle in the current. His son-in-law, 46-year-old Dennis Roberson of Montgomery, Texas, went in to try to save him when he too got swept away in the currents.
Dennis was pulled out of the water by his son after being swept 1/4 to 1/2 miles down the coast. Lumpkin was pulled from the water by 54-year-old Armando Espinoza of Houston who heard his screams for help.
Lumpkin was unresponsive and unable to be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Dennis collapsed after begin pulled from the water and was taken to UTMB Galveston where he was pronounced dead. Espinoza took in water while pulling Lumpkin from the surf and was transported to UTMB Galveston via Life Flight. Espinoza is listed in stable condition.
