HOUSTON (FOX 26) - A 3-alarm fire in southwest Houston ripped through an apartment complex killing a toddler.
Houston firefighters responded to the Lodge Apartments on Corporate Drive at around 2 p.m. Monday. It took about 100 firefighters to extinguish the blaze. The fire destroyed 12 apartment units.
2-year-old Gisselle Ayleen Gomez was the sole fatality.
"When I came outside she was her and her husband were crying over here by the gate saying her daughter was trapped up in the apartment," says neighbor Delia Medina. She was also among the residents who lost her apartment in the fire."I heard one explosion and the window shattered and then the next one went to the bottom and then it just started going this way to our apartment," she says.
We spoke with Gisselle's mother off camera, she said she smelled smoke, but when she opened the door where Gisselle was, the flames and smoke where to much to handle. Gisselle's mother says she thinks the fire started from their TV, and that their building had had electrical issues, but HFD has yet to determine the cause.
Arson investigators are looking into what caused the fire.
