HOUSTON (FOX 26) — More and more people continue to choose Texas to be their home. A new report from Texas Realtors shows more than 200,000 people moved to Houston from out of state in 2017. Only the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex had more in that period.
Businesses are also making the move, which includes a North Carolina cabinet manufacturer that has expanded to Houston to take advantage of home sales and remodeling.
Kitchen Cabinet Distributors specializes in U.S. designed, ready-to-assemble cabinets in a variety of styles that come in flat packs like you might find at IKEA stores.
Described as a "value-oriented" product, the cabinets are sold to vendors, builders and remodelers rather than directly to consumers.
With around a hundred new jobs, KCD says Houston's growth, The Port of Houston, and a diverse business-friendly community made an easy argument for this first-ever expansion to Texas.
"We saw a big opportunity to put inventory on the ground and serve a tremendous local community of builders and remodelers right here in Houston," says KCD chief executive officer Randy Goldstein.
With a ready supply of popular designs, KCD promises it can quickly fill its orders in days rather than weeks.
Houston-area builders and designers, who were given a tour of the north Houston facility, were encouraged by what they hear.
"They explained to us that the turnaround time is 24-to-48 hours," says interior designer Meg Lonergan. "You can have a kitchen in two days, which is awesome!"
The long-term plans for KCD envision as many as five similar distribution centers, but the Houston facility is expected to be a big foothold in the company's growth plans until then.
