Police: 90 cats found in Mooresville home

The Iredell County Animal Shelter is at capacity after 90 cats were seized Wednesday night.

Officials are calling it a hoarding case.

They said the investigation began about two weeks ago. An officer was on a separate call when he noticed a strong smell coming from a Mooresville home.

The owner told the officer she had 20 cats. It turned out to be more than four times that amount. Two cats were found dead inside.

The rest are in varying degrees of health and are being treated at the shelter now.

"We want to make sure that every cat that came from this situation moves into a better situation,” said Brad Gates, Animal Services Director.

The shelter has temporarily stopped accepting cats because its filled. They hope to have some of the cats ready for adoption this weekend.

Charges are pending against the owner of the felines. Charges could be filed as soon as Friday.
