Community responds to the shocking killing of Deputy Darren Goforth

MYFOXHOUSTON - Just as tragic as an officer gunned down while simply getting gas, it is equally ironic where Deputy Darren Goforth spent his last moments alive.

Syed Abbas is the clerk at the Chevron on Telge at West Road where Deputy Goforth was killed Friday night.

"I can not understand why it happened," he said.

Abbas also worked with Goforth and was his replacement at Federal Express twelve years ago when Goforth left to go to the police academy.

"Very nice guy he trained me really well always very helpful. One day I saw him in a uniform coming over here.  Always very nice.  He used to stop by and get gas, chat for a minute," Abbas said of the Deputy.

Deputy Goforth, a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office leaves behind his wife and two kids.These are pictures posted to his Facebook page.

Houston resident, Joseph Davis said, "We love our officers that patrol our neighborhoods and we feel betrayed."

The pump where Deputy Goforth was killed was shut down because so many people are coming by to pray and pay respect.

"I've had the opportunity to meet this guy several times, real nice guy. I set out some flowers here to let the family know they're not going to be alone." Rodriguez said.

"This is the first time I've felt unsafe in my own city.  It's very sad, very sad time for our city and I would like to see us come together," Houston resident Becky Prothro said.
