HOUSTON - 23-year-old Moana Folau Partsch knows pain. “A lot of pain. A lot of sleepless nights," she said.
The Baytown resident broke both of her legs. Her left femur was shattered into 40 pieces. She just had screws and hardware surgically removed last week.
“I would wake up in the middle of the night crying in pain.”
In October 2014, Moana and her fiancé were hit head on by a 22-year-old drunk driver in Baytown.
“It was out of nowhere really, we had no kind of warning the guy was coming at us with no lights on. We had just gotten to the point where we were on our feet and doing okay by ourselves and this happened and it was like an instant start over back to square one,” said Folau Partsch.
The mother of three hasn't been able to work since. The couple lost their apartment. But, through all the financial and medical misery came a miracle -- named Nico. “Every doctor I talked to who knew the story has told me it was a miracle,” she said.
Moana was 5 months pregnant at the time of the accident and was sitting in the passenger’s seat with her legs crossed at impact, blocking a dashboard blow to her belly. “They said it was a miracle that I even made it out alive, especially being pregnant."
The baby in her womb stayed perfectly healthy and is now 6 months old. “He's a perfect little baby, he sleeps all night. He’s a well-mannered happy baby," said Folau Partsch.
While she still has a long road to recovery, she wants to make sure others stay safe while on all roads.
“There are safe ways to enjoy alcohol, driving is not one of them," she said.
The drunk driver was sentenced to 180 days in jail and is already a free man.
