The mosquito-borne virus Zika struck the population of El Salvador in late November 2015 with almost 300 cases reported followed by a patient contracting the virus in Puerto Rico at the end of December 2015. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed on Monday that a traveler who had returned to the Houston area from Latin America had contracted the virus.

Zika virus symptoms include fever, rash, and joint pain and cases of it have been linked to malformations in newborn babies such as microcephaly, according to scientists in Brazil.
