8 Year Old Boy In Need Of Adoptive Family

Right now across the Houston area, there are about 5,000 children in foster care.  Of those, nearly 2,000 kids are ready and waiting to be adopted.  In this month's Finding Families Sally MacDonald introduces you to an eight-year-old boy in need of a loving family.

Deandre loves trains. We brought him to Papa Ben's Train Place on Bellaire where the Houston N Crowd model railroad club let him run the trains.

Deandre was removed from his biological family as a baby after being exposed to drugs and alcohol.

"Deandre is part of a sibling group of 9 children, and very unfortuantely 7 of his siblings have been adopted already," said Atasha Kelley-Harris, Depelchin Children's Center.

Now Depelchin Children's Center is on a mission to find him a permanent, loving home, too.

"Deandre does present to be delayed, cognitively, and has deficits. He will in fact need a family sensitive to that need who understands special education and behavioral services to help him function normally," said Kelley-Harris.

He loves art, dance videos and Batman, but it's trains that are his passion.  Allyn at Papa Ben's gave Deandre is own train set.

Adopting a child can take anywhere from a few months to a year.

"We have really shortened the process these days to help families get through but they've got to submit to the background checks, open homes to social workers to interview them," said Kelley-Harris.
