HOUSTON (FOX 26) - On Monday, the Houston City Council began hearings over layoffs as a result of Prop B.
Some council members claim they didn't know when they voted to approve Prop B, which means layoffs for about 220 firefighters. That also meant higher-ranking firefighters would be demoted.
Chief Samuel Peña says 70 percent of firefighters who got demoted would get pay increases when parity pay went into effect. About 30 percent of the department would not get raises when Prop B is implemented.
Mayor Turner has committed that no HFD employee demoted as a result of the reduction will take a reduction in pay.
Marty Lancton, president of the Houston Professional Firefighters Association weighs in.
